"You will not find Bally na Bride on any map or in any guidebook, but perhaps, if you are familiar with the Irish tongue, you may be able to pierce the somewhat thin disguise of the name. And if you are at home among the people of the west so that they love you, you may be shown the old tower and the mansion house and the little village; the cottage where Mother McDonagh the witch lived and Paddy the Groom saw the Devil in the form of a black tomcat, and the fisherman’s hut on the dangerous cliff path, and the Druidic ring of stones known as the Devil’s Dancers, and you may be told all the old stories on the very places where they happened. But we must be cautious. For if it be libellous, as it certainly is, to say that a man’s house is haunted, it is far more so to say that it is cursed."
The original typescript was found in a box of old books in 2025 - this is Brodie-Innes' last novel. Set a village in the romantic west of Ireland, this is a tale of ancestral curses, black magic, unrequited romance and occult lore.
